Sri Lanka is a year-round destination because it has two monsoon seasons that hit different coasts at different times. When it’s rainy in the south-west, the east coast is usually dry, and the other way round. The trick is matching your route to the season.

The short answer

Sri Lanka’s two monsoons

South-west monsoon (roughly May to September): brings rain to the west and south coasts and the western hill country. The sea on the south coast can be rough.

North-east monsoon (roughly December to February): brings rain to the north and east. This is when the west and south coasts are at their best.

Weather patterns vary from year to year, so check the forecast close to your trip.

Best time by region

West and south coasts

Best from about December to April, with calm seas and sunny days. This is also the main season for whale watching from Mirissa and beach time around Galle.

East coast

Best from about May to September. Arugam Bay is famous for surfing in these months, and Trincomalee and Pasikudah have calm, clear water.

Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella)

The hills can be visited all year, but January to April usually has the clearest views. It’s cooler than the coast, so pack a layer. See our guides to Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella.

Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa)

Generally dry for much of the year, with the best conditions from around January to September. Climb Sigiriya early in the morning to avoid the heat.

Wildlife seasons

Peak season and prices

December to March is the busiest period on the south and west coasts, so hotels, drivers and tours book up and prices are usually higher. Travelling in the shoulder months (April, September, November) often means better deals and fewer crowds.
