Hiring a Private Driver in Sri Lanka: Costs, What’s Included and Tips

Hiring a car with a driver is one of the most popular ways to travel around Sri Lanka. Roads are busy and winding, distances take longer than you’d expect, and a good local driver doubles as a guide. Here’s what it costs and how to choose the right one.

How a private driver works

You agree a route and a price with the driver or company, and they take you between towns, wait while you visit sights, and handle the driving. Most travellers book either:

  • Point-to-point transfers, such as the airport to Kandy, priced per trip, or
  • Multi-day tours, priced per day or for the whole itinerary.

How much does a private driver cost?

Prices are set by each driver and vary a lot. As a rough guide in 2026, a car with driver often costs around US$50–90 a day (roughly LKR 15,000–27,000), and vans for larger groups cost more. The final price depends on:

  • Vehicle type: car, SUV or van
  • Total distance and the number of days
  • Season: December to April is busiest
  • Whether fuel, tolls and parking are included
  • The driver’s experience and languages

Prices are set by each provider and change with season, vehicle and demand. Figures here are rough guides checked in October 2026. Always confirm the final price, and what it includes, before you travel.

What’s usually included?

Most day rates include the vehicle, fuel and the driver’s time. Always confirm whether these are included:

  • Highway tolls and parking
  • Driver’s food and accommodation on multi-day trips. Many hotels offer driver rooms, but some charge.
  • Entrance tickets. These are almost never included.
  • Waiting time and extra kilometres beyond the agreed route

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Is the price for the vehicle or per person?
  2. What exactly does the price include?
  3. Is the vehicle air-conditioned, and how much luggage fits?
  4. Does the driver speak English, or your language?
  5. Is the driver licensed and is the vehicle insured for tourists?
  6. What happens if plans change or you cancel?

Get the agreement in writing, even just in a WhatsApp message, so everyone is clear.

Tipping your driver

Tipping isn’t compulsory, but it’s common to tip a driver who has looked after you well, usually at the end of the trip. Many travellers give a set amount per day. Give what feels fair for the service you received.
