Colombo Airport to Kandy: Taxi, Train and Bus Options (2026)
Kandy is one of the first stops for many visitors to Sri Lanka. It’s about 110 km from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA, airport code CMB) at Katunayake, and the trip usually takes around 3 to 3.5 hours by road. Here’s how the main options compare in 2026.
Quick comparison
| Option | Time | Rough cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car or taxi | 3–3.5 hours | About LKR 14,000–22,000 per car | Families, luggage, late arrivals |
| Van (6–12 people) | 3–3.5 hours | More than a car; ask for a quote | Groups |
| Train + road | 4–5 hours or more | Under LKR 1,000 for the train | Budget travellers |
| Bus | 4–5 hours or more | Low cost | Light luggage, tight budgets |
Prices are set by each provider and change with season, vehicle and demand. Figures here are rough guides checked in October 2026. Always confirm the final price, and what it includes, before you travel.
Option 1: Private car or taxi (easiest)
A private car is the simplest way to reach Kandy, especially after a long flight. Your driver meets you at arrivals, loads your bags and takes you straight to your hotel. Many drivers will also stop at the Pinnawala area or a spice garden on the way if you ask.
Typical price: roughly LKR 14,000–22,000 for a car, depending on the vehicle, the time of day and whether highway tolls are included. Vans for bigger groups cost more.
What affects the price:
- Vehicle size: hatchback, sedan, SUV or van
- Night arrivals or very early pickups
- Waiting time if your flight is delayed
- Highway tolls and extra stops
Tip: book before you land and send your flight number, so the driver can track delays. Ask whether the price is per vehicle and whether tolls and waiting time are included.

Option 2: Train (check the latest status)
The Colombo to Kandy railway is one of the classic ways into the hills, but it was badly damaged by Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025. Trains from Colombo Fort started running again in October 2026, but only as far as Peradeniya, just outside Kandy, while the bridge into Kandy is rebuilt.
From the airport you would first need to get to Colombo Fort (about an hour by road), take the train to Peradeniya, then a short tuk-tuk or taxi into Kandy. Fares are cheap, typically well under LKR 1,000 even in first class, but the whole trip takes longer than driving. Check the latest Sri Lanka Railways timetable before you rely on it.
Option 3: Bus (cheapest)
Public buses run between Colombo and Kandy throughout the day, and air-conditioned express buses are faster and more comfortable. From the airport you’ll usually need to get to Colombo or a junction town first. Buses are very cheap but can be crowded, with little space for large suitcases.
Which option should you choose?
- Arriving at night or with family: book a private car.
- On a tight budget with light bags: bus or train.
- Want to see more on the way: hire a driver for the day and add stops.
